Prologue
Soy&Synth is the first public event format that we brought under the umbrella of sōydivision back in 2018. This format is a social experiment where we strive to create a social space that aims to stimulate synthesis processes such as conversations, ideas, and brainstorming while enjoying our artistic strategy proposal: experimental music and Indonesian food.
#soyandsynth has been held 39 times, not only in Berlin but also in several cities such as Vilnius, Zurich, and Yogyakarta. This format has become our main vehicle for making new friendships and artistic collaborations. 2022 has been a special year for #soyandsynth as we strive to focus more on crafting the narrative of each edition for the entire period. Starting with the continuation of conversations and collaborations with fellow diasporas from Latin America, we finally decided to dedicate the entire edition of #soyandsynth 2022 as a platform for interaction between Southeast Asian and Latin American diasporas. The first strategy was to engage with artist and researcher Pedro Oliveira and Kavan Spruyt (Midnight Shift) as co-curators, and Radical Sounds Latin America Festival as partner, additionally with the team that curated previous editions of #soyandsynth, namely Morgan Sully (L-KW) and Ariel Orah (Soydivision).
The interface we offer is a series of six tandem improvisation sets, with each set featuring one artist from the South East Asian diasporas and one artist from the Latin American diasporas; a discourse session for conversation; and documentation of the series in the form of a compilation album from the concerts. 12 artists (6 from SEA and 6 Latin America) were finally selected from the results of our curation. The series of events consisted of 3 concerts – Heizhaus am Uferstudios in August, Morphine Raum in September, and Kantine am Berghain in October; a Discourse and Dinner Session in November at Ana Conda am Ufer, in collaboration with Radical Sounds Latin America; and a compilation album launch in December at Refuge Worldwide Radio.
Finally, we would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the realization of #soyandsynth 2022, especially Musicboard Berlin who has been the main supporter, and to every single splendid soul who came to all of the editions this year! See you at #soyandsynth 2023!
